I have done most of my adoption “learning” on lists and websites, to be honest. But recently I read through a bunch of adoption books and I have to say, maybe this is out there and I haven’t read it, but what I REALLY wanted was a “For dummies” type book specifically devoted to International Adoption. Or an adoption book specifically for my state!!!!! So much of the nitty gritty info was either totally obsolete, applied to domestic adoption or was not relevent in my state.

    Have fun! HTH!

There’s a few different adoption for dummies types of books out there (including How to Adopt Internationally: A Guide for Agency-Directed and Independent Adoptions) … the big problem with that type of book is that things change so quickly even a 2003 edition is sadly out of date (especially with VN adoptions!). But maybe a “Girlfriends Guide” type of book for adopting? I think that would be a lot of fun to read (and write!).

    Nicole,

Thank you so much for all of this information. We hope to be traveling before the end of the year and I think that we have to make our own travel arrangements but I don’t know if that is just to get to VN or if it’s while we are there also. There is a group traveling from our agency in a few weeks so I can also get there take, but I would appreciate knowing what hotels you enjoyed especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Again, Thanks so much for the adivce. We will use it!!!

Great again Nicole! I’m so glad you say to bring a laptop. We are planning on it, but I wondered if we were crazy. Now I know we’re smart. ;o)

I say post your hotel reviews on your blog if you’re comfortable doing so.

If your comfortable posting hotel reviews I would say go for it. I know for myself it relieves stress having one thing researched first ahnd and recent rather than depending on a travel book written by a Irishwoman that lives in France who traveled 2 years ago. (nothing against the French or the Irish, but I am aware that we all live different day to day lives and differences across countries can be great, and therefor expectations can be fuzzy)

We should all be concerned about the crumbling state of Vietnam's international adoptions. Several adoptive parents have banned together to raise awareness and created a blog called Voices for Vietnam Adoption Integrity. Their posts are interesting, well researched, and on the pulse of what's really going on. If you're interested in Vietnam adoption, their site should be your first visit. And second. And third.
